COVID-19 Micro Relief Fund for Vulnerable Solwezi Women
Zambia is among the many countries heavily affected by the Coronavirus.
Many of the most vulnerable women in Zambia lived on less than one dollar a day prior to the emergence of COVID-19 . The pandemic disproportionately aggravated the lives of women in Solwezi, as many of their incomes fell to below survival levels. The overall impact of the pandemic has left families in Solwezi without food, soap, medical bills, and other essential basic needs.
The loss of business and employment opportunities resulting from COVID-19 has led many vulnerable women to become involved in prostitution and other illicit activities. These decisions have been undertaken as a desperate solution to earn a living wage and have placed thousands of woman at increased risk of sexual assault and STI transmission.
The COVID-19 relief project was created to provide essential resources to vulnerable women. These funds are encouraged to be used to start small home-based businesses that can help compromise for the financial constraints of the pandemic. As a result, vulnerable women will have less incentives to engage in dangerous activities and families will be provided with the financial support to send their children to school.
CCCYD aims to help 500 vulnerable women with this project and sustain families from COVID-19 financial burdens. Given that this initiative is a revolving fund, benefits will be rewarded to a wide array of people. Micro-entrepreneurship has also been successful in attaining local development and improving income at household levels. All of those who receive funds will additionally be offered micro business management training. Empowering women and families is critical to ameliorating COVID-19 impacts and advancing the educational opportunities of the vulnerable community.
